Art on My Walls: Elizabeth Bradford

Sometimes I forget how amazing my little hometown is. Davidson, North Carolina is a tiny college hamlet about 30 minutes north of Charlotte. It was a great place to grow up and the college presence generated plenty of intellectual and architectural fodder. One of my favorite local painters from the area is Elizabeth Bradford. I went to elementary school with her kids and remember seeing her at the local swimming hole from time to time.

Now my parents have one of her gorgeous works in their dining room. She paints mostly photorealistic landscapes with intensified colors and light. Her sense of light reminds me of one of my other favorite genres of art, Impressionism.

When in Asheville…

dsc_0038-15

Asheville, NC is a quaint little metropolis just under two hours from the Charlotte, NC and Greenville, SC areas respectively. Don’t dismiss this little town as too granola, too fast. It has many unique shops that have garnered wide recognition. My favorites include Malaprop’s Bookstore, with its own cafe inside, Chocolate Fetish, a gourmet chocolate shop, and of course the local art supply store, True Blue Art Supply. So grab a cabin on airbnb in nearby Weaverville, Hendersonville or Montreat and enjoy a scenic weekend in the Blue Ridge.

Star Light, Star Bright: Celestial Designs I’m Loving

With the Christmas season approaching, one motif I think that gets forgotten about (along with Reindeer)is stars. I’m not saying these stars have to be biblical, celestial bodies are something that humans have long drawn inspiration from.

Dipped in Color

via Girly Bubble

I can definitely get on board with the color dip trend. While maybe not for the ends of my hair (because I am not that adventurous), I am quickly pinning and mentally-listing a variety of color dipped items for human and home. Below are some of my favorites. The icypop earrings are unfortunately sold out but I could not, not, include them. Luckily, shop owner Kirsty Eckard of Australia is not in short supply of other wonderful stocking stuffers and goodies.

Organize-A-Mania

ImageWhen I was a kid I enjoyed going into art stores. Most of all I liked to admire the rows of pens, markers and paints organized row upon row in color order. Of course I wanted them like candy. Even now as I write this I am jonesing to leave my armchair at Starbucks and head to Dick Blick. But somehow, when I brought home my selections, they just didn’t look as nice as they did on the magical wall of color. Sad trombone. This week I have been reading and pinning a lot about organization. These are the images that are inspiring me lately. I need to get all of my art supplies in one place so I will actually use them and *gasp* make stuff.

I will let you know when this materializes…

Monday Musings: Reindeer

Just last week I was tweeting angrily about Starbucks’ early display of Christmas garb. Now, I have the bug. Not in the garrish red and green way though, no. My eyes are gravitating toward reindeer motifs and deer motifs lately.

Eastern Inspiration

While I settle for relaxing in outdoor seating at the local strip mall coffee shop, I dream of far-away locales of Africa and the East, especially in this heat. Calypso St. Barth has a beautiful Moroccan-inspired Jaipuri Rug that sent me on a search for inspiring tropical decor. Pinterest here I come!
